  3. Week 2 — Daily 15-minute timed lookup drills in 780 CMR. Add IRC drills if your classification covers 1&2-family.
  4. Week 2 — Read MGL Chapter 142A end-to-end. HIC law questions are recurring and high-value.
  5. Week 3 — Mixed timed practice sets. Tag every miss into: lookup speed, HIC/142A, lead/RRP, energy code, or general code.
  6. Week 4 — Two full timed simulations. Final review checklist. Confirm ID, authorization, and allowed materials with Prometric.

Common confusion for MA CSL candidates

  • CSL vs HIC — they are separate. CSL is the building code/supervisor license. HIC is a registration for contractors doing home improvement work on existing 1–4 family homes. Many people need both.
  • Classification matters — Unrestricted vs Restricted vs 1&2-family vs specialty classifications have different exam outlines and allowed references
  • NASCLA is not accepted for CSL — the CSL exam is state-specific; NASCLA does not substitute
  • Edition lock — MA still references IRC 2015 / IECC 2015 in many classifications. Don't show up with 2018 or 2021 editions unless the current handbook says so.
