California CSLB Exam Study Plan
California requires a separate Law & Business exam and a trade classification exam for most CSLB license paths. Both are typically closed-book through PSI โ focus on recall, scenario reading, and elimination rather than book tabbing.
Reference list (study guides โ confirm with CSLB)
Book List Confidence: Medium โ CSLB exams are closed-book; use these as study references, not exam-day materials. Confirm your classification bulletin before purchasing.
Topic emphasis
- Seismic detailing โ anchor bolts, shear wall nailing, cripple wall bracing
- Wildfire hardening โ CBC/CRC Chapter 7A, ember-resistant vents
- Title 24 Part 6 โ energy calculations, duct testing, acceptance forms
- California labor standards โ prevailing wage, apprenticeship ratios, stop orders
- Law & Business โ mechanics liens, workers' comp, payroll taxes, contracts, estimating
Suggested 30-day study plan
- Week 1 โ Confirm CSLB classification(s) and exam requirements; pull PSI bulletins; build a miss log by topic (code, safety, business law, labor).
- Week 2 โ Law & Business: lien law, workers' comp, payroll; daily timed scenario drills.
- Week 3 โ Trade content: seismic, wildfire, Title 24; short timed sets with immediate review.
- Week 4 โ Mixed timed simulations blending L&B + trade-style questions; schedule both exams after Notice to Appear; complete Live Scan.
Common California confusion
- Two exams. Law & Business is separate from your trade classification exam โ use the B&L checker to confirm your path.
- Closed-book. Do not buy code books expecting to bring them to PSI โ study for recall and application instead.
- Notice to Appear first. CSLB must issue your notice before you schedule with PSI; Live Scan fingerprints are required.
- Classification-specific trade exams. B, C, and specialty classifications test different domains โ match study to your exact classification.
